A night at the pictures

As you will know, the first roadshow will take place at City Screen, York on 3 December. We will have the premier of our Voice by Choice film, but that is going to be only about 3 1/2 minutes long, so is not going to fill a whole evening. However, we have the chance to choose other relevant films to be shown that day. We will have to pay per film, so we will have to be selective.

Would members like to nominate which film(s) we might show?

So far we have had suggested:

Any votes for the above, or other suggestions?

I don't know 'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly' or 'Dark Star' but, given that the Roadshow is about 'The Art and Science of Speech Synthesis', I'd vote for '2001' as the classic film in which speech synthesis plays a key role (including Hal's reversion to singing "Daisy Daisy"). The latter is a direct conenction with some of the first synthesis done at Bell Labs, and an original "Daisy Daisy" recording is here ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebK4wX76RZ4. Maybe we can play this also (and/or have someone give a short lecture on synthesis which includes various demos)?

Suggestions from Sandra: 1) Children of a Lesser God http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090830/ Not sure if it is appropriate because it is about a speech teacher for the deaf. 2) Moon http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/ I have not seen this film, but there seems to be a HAL-type character in it that might be interesting.
